THE NEW 2019 JEEP WRANGLER JL

THE NEW 2019 JEEP WRANGLER JL

There is some excitement surrounding the news that the 2019 Jeep Wrangler JL will be sporting a lot of new features. In fact, it is the first major redesign for the model since 2007. There is also some trepidation from long-time fans that are concerned that Jeep will refine the Wrangler a bit too much and it will lose its much revered rugged look.

EXTERIOR FEATURES

Old school halogen headlights finally get upgraded to LEDs. This will come standard on the Rubicon and Sahara. They will be offered as options on the Sport and Sport S.

The exterior body style will remain largely the same with just a few minor tweaks with a nod to aerodynamics. The Wrangler is an instantly identifiable vehicle and designers acknowledge that to mess too much with the body style would not go over very well with Wrangler fans. One of the key differences between the two- and four-door Wrangler models is that the two-door seats four, but the four-door — also known as the Wrangler Unlimited — seats five. At 96.8 inches, the two-door Wrangler’s wheelbase is 21.6 inches shorter than the Unlimited’s. The breakover angle on the two-door is about 5 degrees better than the Unlimited, but the four-door’s departure angle is slightly superior at 36.1 degrees versus the two-door’s 35.9 degrees (with the 245/75R17s on the Sport trim).

In terms of exterior dimensions, the two-door Wrangler is significantly shorter in length at 166.8 inches versus the Unlimited, which checks in at 188.4 inches. Both the two- and four-door models are 73.8 inches wide and 73.6 inches tall.

INTERIOR FEATURES

Four new trim levels for the 2018 Wrangler (Sport, Sport S, Rubicon, and Sahara) will likely carry over and could be joined by new trims and special-edition models.

The Sport model should continue as the base model and for 2018 comes standard with 17-inch black steel wheels, a Command-Trac four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case, a 5.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with Bluetooth, a zipperless Sunrider soft top, a rearview camera, tow hooks, and skid plates. The more luxurious Sahara model will keep its 18-inch wheels, side steps, a 7.0-inch infotainment system touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, and dual-zone climate control.

SUSPENSION

The 2019 Wrangler solid front and rear axles will remain. They are a nod to the Wrangler's tough character. Little changes with the rest of the suspension, no upgrades to coil spring suspensions and unibody construction for this off-road icon.

A Jeep isn't a Jeep without 4WD and all models offer it as standard equipment.

UNDER THE HOOD

The biggest changes for the 2019 model come on the mechanical end. Expect to see the 285-hp 3.6-liter V-6 and 270-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four return in 2019, in addition to the six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions. A new turbodiesel V-6 will join the lineup, making around 440 lb-ft of torque. For 2018 models, EPA-rated fuel economy ratings for the 3.6-liter V-6 ranged between 17/25 mpg city/highway and 17/23 mpg.
